Located on the Gulf of Mexico, the “Bayou State” is home to 8 units within the National Park Service including: Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, Cane River National Heritage Area, Cane River Creole National Historical Park, El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, Poverty Point National Monument and Vicksburg National Military Park.
This biologically diverse state is also home to the 600,000 acre Kisatchie National Forest, and Saline Bayou which is designated a National Wild and Scenic River.
There are over 22 state parks, 17 state historic sites, 1 state preservation area, over 955,000 acres of Wildlife Management Areas, and over 51 rivers, streams and bayous to explore.
