ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA
Centrally located in the state of Louisiana, the historic city of Alexandria is adjacent to Pineville, just across the Red River and less than an hour’s drive from Cane River Creole National Historical Park and the Cane River National Heritage Area.
A region rich in Civil War, WWII, lumber and cultural history, you could spend a week just touring historic plantation houses (some said to haunted), museums, memorials and cemeteries, churches and cathedrals, and forts. Tours of Kent House Plantation, Loyd Hall Plantation, and Epps House – Solomon Northup’s Gateway to Freedom, are fascinating. England Airpark, which was once the England Air Force Base, now features the Alexandria International Airport, Heritage Park, OakWing Golf Club 18-hole Championship Golf Course that is part of Louisiana’s Audubon Golf Trail, and Parc England Boutique Hotel. Alexandria has numerous lodging options from Plantation B&Bs to brand hotels, and there are plenty of restaurant options in the area, ranging from seafood to baked goods, to the popular Tunk’s Cypress Inn on beautiful Lake Kincaid in Kisatchie National Forest. Alexandria is host to numerous events and festivals throughout the year, so there’s always something to do!
