TAKING TIME OFF IS A SACRED ACT OF SELF-COMPASSION
By Shelley Whizin
We live in a culture that worships productivity.
Our calendars overflow.
Our phones never stop buzzing.
And somehow, we’ve been taught that rest is indulgent, lazy, or even selfish.
But here’s the truth I’ve come to know, both as a transformational life coach and as a death midwife:
The soul speaks in silence.
And when we never pause, we can’t hear her.
Taking time off isn’t a break from life.
It’s a return to life.
It’s a radical act of self-compassion — a way of saying, “I matter. My well-being matters. My joy is not optional.”
When we run on empty, we disconnect from what truly feeds us:
Laughter.
Beauty.
Stillness.
Pleasure.
Presence.
I’ve seen this over and over again — not just in those I’ve supported through end-of-life transitions, but in high-achieving women who have lost their spark because they’ve spent years trying to earn their worth by doing more, more, more.
So let me remind you…
You don’t have to wait until you’re burned out to take a breath.
You don’t need permission to say no.
You don’t need to justify your need for stillness.
Rest is not a reward.
It’s a birthright.
In fact, the most soul-aligned, impactful, and radiant people I know are the ones who protect their time off.
They schedule it.
They honor it.
They let it recalibrate them from the inside out.
When you take time off — whether that’s a weekend with no obligations, a slow walk without your phone, or an afternoon nap in the middle of a busy week — you are tending to the temple of your own being.
You are reminding yourself that you are not a machine.
You are a miracle.
And here’s the sacred paradox:
The more you rest, the more clearly you hear your inner wisdom.
The more you pause, the more purposefully you move forward.
The more you say yes to replenishment, the more magnetic your energy becomes.
So, if you’ve been waiting for a sign to take a break, consider this it.
Not because you’re falling behind…
But because you’re ready to come back to yourself.
💛 Cancel the meeting.
💛 Say no to the thing that drains you.
💛 Choose joy instead of duty.
💛 Sleep in.
💛 Stare at the sky.
Your heart will thank you.
And your soul will sing.
Because in the stillness, you will remember:
You are not here to survive life.
You are here to savor it.
ENJOY YOUR SUMMER.
It’s your life. Enjoy the journey. And remember to bring love into everything you do… and a lot of humor along the way.
