SAFE SWIMMING BEACHES ON KAUAI, HAWAI’I
By Linda Ballou
Here are five of the safest swimming beaches on the island of Kauai:
- Poipu Beach: Located on the sunny south shore of Kauai, Poipu Beach is known for its calm waters and a designated swimming area protected by a reef. It offers ideal conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and even beginner surfing.
- Hanalei Bay: Situated on Kauai’s north shore, Hanalei Bay is a picturesque and family-friendly beach. It features a long crescent-shaped shoreline with shallow waters, making it safe for swimming and wading. However, always be cautious of changing conditions and ocean swells.
- Lydgate Beach Park: Located near Lihue on the east coast of Kauai, Lydgate Beach Park is a popular destination for families. It has two protected swimming areas, enclosed by rock barriers, creating calm lagoons suitable for swimming and snorkeling.
- Anini Beach: Situated on the north shore of Kauai, Anini Beach offers a long stretch of white sand and shallow waters protected by the largest coral reef in Hawaii. The reef acts as a barrier, creating a tranquil swimming area with minimal waves, but the swimming area is shallow.
- Ke’e Beach: Located at the end of the road on the north shore of Kauai, Ke’e Beach is known for its stunning natural beauty. It features a reef-protected lagoon that offers safe swimming and snorkeling opportunities. However, be cautious during periods of high surf. This is part of the Napali Wilderness Area which requires a reservation to enter.
Please note that ocean conditions can change rapidly, and it’s always important to check for any advisories or warnings before entering the water. Additionally, it’s recommended to swim at lifeguarded beaches, and to exercise caution and respect for the ocean at all times.
Never turn your back on the ocean is a good policy no matter where you are swimming.
