The Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, in Quebec, Canada, is the most photographed hotel in the world. It’s magical, breathtaking, and majestic. Staying there was a dream come true.

The Style:
In the heart of Old Québec City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, this 5-star luxury hotel features a charming European style. Le Château Frontenac is a stunning example of Châteauesque architecture, a style inspired by the grand French Renaissance castles of the Loire Valley. It looks like something out of a storybook with its steeply pitched copper roofs, ornate gables, dormer windows, and whimsical turrets—all the ingredients of a fairy-tale fortress.

The Name:
This epic hotel is named after Louis Buade de Frontenac, the Governor of New France. His memory holds a special place in the hearts of the people and a significant place in the history of New France and the formation of modern Canada. Frontenac’s portrait hangs in the hotel lobby.

A Trendsetter:
This style became especially popular in Canada during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thanks to the Canadian Pacific Railway’s vision of building luxurious hotels that would rival Europe’s finest. Architect Bruce Price designed the original structure, and it set the tone for a whole generation of grand railway hotels across Canada.

The Interior:
From the moment I stepped into the grand lobby of Le Château Frontenac, I felt as though I had entered a living fairy tale. The blend of elegance and warmth was immediately inviting—ornate chandeliers, rich woodwork, hand-painted ceilings, and friendly staff who made me feel at home in this stunning piece of history. Our room overlooked the St. Lawrence River, and the city’s old-world rooftops sprawling beneath the cliff. It was surreal as I wandered the halls; I was constantly reminded that I was walking in the footsteps of travelers and dignitaries from around the world, all drawn by the same magic and charm. Every detail, from the plush bedding to the attentive service, contributed to making my experience exceptional. This landmark hotel has undergone a meticulous restoration, with modern conveniences and new luxuries without losing any of its century-old allure.

To elevate your visit, upgrade to Fairmont Gold. We indulged in unparalleled luxury where we were treated to an exclusive, privileged hotel-within-a-hotel experience designed for discerning guests. It includes a dedicated concierge and spacious private lounge access with spectacular views. There’s also an all-day honor bar, complimentary breakfast, afternoon canapes, and evening desserts. Fairmont Gold was the ultimate way to savor the magic of Le Château Frontenac—like slipping into a secret world tucked within the castle walls.

Dining Options:
We thoroughly enjoyed dining at the hotel’s various restaurants as we embarked on an authentic Quebec culinary journey.

Bistro Sam, whose name is inspired by Québec founder Samuel de Champlain, highlights the latest culinary trends in a casual setting with an open-concept kitchen and innovative mixology. The sunroom offers an exceptional view of the St. Lawrence River. We enjoyed lunch and dinner at Bistro Sam’s. Both have stunning views of the river day and night. For dinner, we enjoyed a fabulous selection of foods from across Canada. We enjoyed cheeses from Quebec, wine from Ontario’s Niagara-on-the-Lake, and excellent beef from Alberta.

There are many options. The star is Champlain. This is a fine-dining restaurant destination that seamlessly blends historical charm with contemporary design, overlooking the St. Lawrence River. The French cuisine and impressive list of fine wines made our dining experience a truly special moment. The wine display extends from floor to ceiling and features a sliding ladder for easy access to the top wines. Champlain has been included on the 2025 MICHELIN recommended restaurant list.

Then, between the two restaurants is the award-winning luxury bar, 1608 – a nod to the year Quebec was founded. This is what you call a ‘destination bar’. This area of the Chateau was once a library, so they have carried out a strong library theme, and the menus are even inside library books. Showcasing a circular brass bar with a marble counter as its glamorous centerpiece, and lit by a sparkling hand-crafted chandelier, Old Quebec City’s 1608 Bar offers a tranquil, timeless elegance. Cozy up by the inviting fireplaces with a creative or a classic cocktail. At 1608, it’s the art of mixology in all its glory.

Also, don’t miss Champlain’s famous Sunday Brunch, it’s the best in Québec City. Or for the perfect afternoon break, try the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac’s delicious classic English Afternoon Tea.

Famous Guests:
Since 1893, Le Château Frontenac has proudly stood on the cliff of Cap Diamond, welcoming guests from around the world in a pleasant, elegant, and refined atmosphere. It once welcomed King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, and numerous other dignitaries and celebrities have stayed at what locals call “The Castle.”

A Crucial Political Decision:
The First Québec Conference took place at Le Château Frontenac in 1943. During this historic meeting, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin D. Roosevelt were hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King. These world leaders made critical decisions on strategies for World War II and D-Day, the Allied invasion of occupied Europe.

Take a Tour:
This tour is a must, even if you are not staying at the hotel. The backstory of Le Chateau Frontenac, with its fascinating details, really enhanced our trip. We saw many historical items and rooms that visitors would not normally view. A fun touch was that our guide was dressed in period costume; it really brought history to life!

I have wanted to stay at Le Chateau Frontenac ever since I first learned about it. Everything about this historic hotel was fabulous, inspiring, and unforgettable. Le Château Frontenac is truly a destination in its own right.  With its stately turrets and regal silhouette rising from the cliffside, Le Château Frontenac doesn’t just overlook Old Québec—it reigns over it like a dreamy sentinel from another time. Every cobblestone street and lantern-lit alley below feels like it’s basking in the château’s timeless charm.
