Whether you’re seeking a peaceful escape or an exhilarating exploration, South Sound offers the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. As you navigate its tranquil waters, you’ll discover hidden coves, sandy beaches, and breathtaking vistas that will take your breath away. So, grab your gear, set sail, and prepare to explore, relax, and enjoy the stunning views in this often overlooked, yet enchanting maritime paradise.

South Sound, Washington, is home to many beautiful marinas that cater to boaters seeking a mix of convenience, amenities, and stunning views. I just returned from a yacht club group cruise. Six boats in our club signed up for a three-day group cruise.

South Sound Marina

Here are some of the top marinas our group visited:
Located in Olympia, Swantown Marina features modern facilities and a welcoming atmosphere. With easy access to downtown Olympia and nearby parks, it’s ideal for those seeking to experience the local culture and scenery. Be sure to make the seven-minute walk to Anthony’s for happy hour.

Longbranch Marina is a small, charming, and picturesque marina located in Longbranch, Washington, on the Key Peninsula in the South Sound. Known for its friendly atmosphere and scenic surroundings, it offers boaters a welcoming place to dock and explore the beautiful Puget Sound region. Picnic Pavilion.

Joemma Beach State Park is located on the stunning Key Peninsula in Washington State, offering visitors a beautiful mix of forested areas, sandy beaches, and waterfront views of the Puget Sound. It’s a popular destination for outdoor recreation, including boating. While the park does not have a fully equipped marina (no water or power) or extensive moorage facilities, boaters can find some temporary moorage and anchoring options available in the vicinity. However, it’s advisable to double-check local regulations regarding moorage and anchorage. Fishing, kayaking, dog walking, and picnicking are featured amenities here.

State Capitol Building in Olympia

Olympia, the capital of Washington State, is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Here are my five top attractions you shouldn’t miss when boating in the South Sound:
Uber and taxis are plentiful to take you from your boat to any of these attractions.

–  Washington State Capitol: The impressive dome of the State Capitol building is a landmark in Olympia. Visitors can take guided tours to learn about the building’s history, architecture, and the legislative process. The surrounding Capitol Campus features beautiful gardens, sculptures, and views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.

– Percival Landing Park: This waterfront park along Budd Inlet offers scenic views, walking paths, picnic areas, and a marina. It’s a great place to relax or enjoy outdoor activities. The park also hosts public art installations and is close to local restaurants and shops.

–  A notable Dale Chihuly art display: The Washington State Capitol features several pieces by the renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. One of the most prominent installations is the Chihuly Glass Bridge, which connects the state Capitol building to the adjoining Legislative Building and is adorned with beautiful glass sculptures.

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge: Located just outside of Olympia, this refuge offers stunning natural landscapes and diverse wildlife habitats. Visitors can explore miles of hiking trails and boardwalks through wetlands and salt marshes while observing birds, otters, and other wildlife. It’s an excellent spot for birdwatching and photography.

– The Olympia Farmers Market: A vibrant and popular destination located in downtown Olympia, Washington, right on the water. You can moor your boat steps from the market. Established in 1975, it has become a cherished community hub for both locals and visitors. Here’s what you can expect when visiting the market: Local vendors, seasonal offerings, a lively and welcoming atmosphere, and many food options. The market is conveniently located near the waterfront, providing a beautiful backdrop for shopping. Its location also makes it easy to explore other nearby attractions in downtown Olympia.

These attractions highlight the South Sound’s blend of government, nature, and cultural experiences, making it a great destination to explore by boat.  Enjoy your visit, as this destination is Diva Approved!
