SAN BENITO COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

San Benito County Historical Society is a non-profit 501(c)3 historical society operating a Museum and separate Historical Park.

Anita Kane talks about the museum’s exhibits and research archives, as well as the historical park’s buildings, exhibits and annual events on Big Blend Radio.

Mission: To collect and preserve materials pertaining to the history of San Benito County. To promote an interest in and appreciation of the County’s past, by providing programs that offer educational opportunities and experiences. To bring together for exchange of ideas those interested in history, especially that of San Benito County.

Museum: Located in the historic Wapple House at 498 5th St, Hollister CA, the Museum is where Membership General meetings and social functions are held. Here are traditional museum displays as well as the Society’s Research Room and Archives.  Currently the Museum is open by appointment only; please call 831.635.0335 or email museum@sbchistoricalsociety.org to set up a tour.

Historical Park: Located at 8300 Hwy 25, Tres Pinos CA, the Historic Park Village is a collection of historic buildings and artifacts relocated in a rural park setting within the larger recreational San Benito County Historic Park.  Open to the public to stroll through 7 days a week, the Village is the site for many historical-related community events.   Email:  parktours@sbchistoricalsociety.org to set up a guided tour inside buildings.

Research: The society maintains a large collection of archival materials. These include county histories and other reference books, local history subject files, files on some local families and individuals, San Benito County newspapers, tax assessment rolls, business directories, school year books, great registers, cemetery information, family histories, diaries, maps, photos, memorabilia and much more.  Our materials are available for use by researchers who visit the research room. Searches of our holdings are also available by written request. We are located just down the street from the San Benito County Courthouse and a visit to the Research Center can easily be combined with a visit to the county offices. Research Room is open 2nd Monday of the month, 10-4pm.  The Visitor Center is open on Saturdays, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Email:research@sbchistoricalsociety.org to arrange your research experience.
