Following in the Footsteps of John C. Fremont

Fremont (January 21, 1813 – July 13, 1890), who was American explorer, politician, and soldier. Known as “The Pathfinder”, he led five expeditions into the American West during the 1840s. While working for the US Navy as a mathematics professor, Fremont learned to travel by the stars which set him on course for a career in the Topographical Corps. His expeditions with Kit Carson as guide, allowed him to thoroughly document pathways known only by native Indian tribes and trappers. These maps guided western bound settlers and helped advance America’s Manifest Destiny. Fremont was married to writer Jessie, daughter of Senator Thomas Hart Benton. In 1856, Fremont made history as the very first Presidential candidate of the Republican anti-slavery party.
