Utah became the 45th state admitted to the U.S. on January 4, 1896. The southern Utah region was explored by the Spanish in 1540, led by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, while looking for the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. Utah became known for its natural beauty with the establishment of 17 National Park Units

Utah is also home to approximately 44 State Parks, 8 National Forests, 3 National Wildlife Refuges, 1 Wild & Scenic River, 1,833 Places listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 14 National Historic Landmarks ,18 National Natural Landmarks, and 2 National Heritage Areas.
