On October 31, 1864, eight days before the presidential election of 1864, Nevada became the 36th state in the union. Set within the Great Basin, Nevada is largely desert and semi-arid and is home to approximately 8 National Park Units, 27 State Parks, 3 National Forests, 9 National Wildlife Refuges, 141,796 miles of river (none designated), 8 National Historic Landmarks, 6 National Natural Landmarks, and 381 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
